1/7 Update from Al Qaim

The First Team has been on the ground in our area of operations in western Al Anbar province for 3 weeks now. On 11 Sept we formally took control of the mission here and said goodbye to 3d Bn 7th Marines as they begin their trip home. We are grateful for their help in taking over the mission, and we wish them all a safe journey home and a happy reunion with their families.
While I cannot pass on specifics, the general locations of the battalion have not changed since my last update. Baker Company and their attachments are still at Camp Gannon in Husaybah, and the rest of the battalion task force is at Al Qaim working and operating in the towns of Karabilah, Sadah, and Ubaydi. While it is a fact that the areas we operate in are hostile and very hazardous, the Marines and sailors of the battalion are already highly proficient in identifying the dangers, protecting themselves and innocent Iraqis, and eliminating the threats. The courage, discipline, and skill of these young men reduces the risks and never ceases to impress me every day.

By now I'm sure you have all learned of the battalion's losses. On 3 Sept Capt Rowe, Lt Winchester, and LCpl Wilt were killed in action, and GySgt Trujillo and LCpl Laymanleary were wounded. On 15 Sept, LCpl Drew Uhles was also killed in action by an IED in Husaybah. In that same incident, LCpl Graham Walker was wounded, but thankfully he has already returned to the battalion and is expected to recover quickly. Our thoughts are always with our fallen heroes and our prayers go out to their families to grant them peace in their time of suffering. The loss of these men is painful for us all, but know that we will always carry on because that is what our comrades would want us to do. It is to honor them that we continue our mission.

Please understand that when events like this occur your Marine or sailor may not be able to contact you by phone or e-mail. We must restrict communications until after the next of kin have been properly notified. I know that nothing is more comforting for you as hearing your loved one's voice, so rest assured that I will not cut off communications unless it is absolutely necessary.

As always, you are all in our thoughts and your prayers sustain us. Every one of us looks forward to the day we return and are reunited with our families. Until then, thank you for your continuing support.

My brother recently went to Iraq, and it wasnt until now that I figured out where he was. He id with the 1/7, and it is nice to have found a page where I can hear from other families with loved ones overseas. If anyone can recommend other ways to keep in touch, it would be much appreciated as I have not gotten any letters from him, and the one time he called, I was not able to get it.

Rory, My brother is with 1/7. Have you looked at marineparents.com or usmc.mil? That's where I found an address for my brother. He was there almost 2 weeks before he called and I couldn't wait that long to write him. So that is where I found my info. There is also a hotline number but this update that was posted is the exact message on the hotline.

My son is with the 2/2 tanks out of LeJeune, but his address puts him with 1/7 H&S Tanks. He's been gone 2 wks & I haven't heard from him. Has anyone heard from that platoon?

I have been very lucky i have heard from my husband a lot of different times. He is with 1/7 and as of today he is doing just fine. I think a good way of staying in tought is the email and using a recorder. Buy one for who every is over seas and then buy yourself one. Record a message on one side and then mail him or her that tape and the recorder. Remember to send a small box or envelope with postage so they can mail back you the tape. I think it is a great idea beaucse you can pick up the recorder and listen to your loved ones voice. Always remember to keep a simle on your face and pray always for all the service men and women. I have received 2 letters from my son who is with the 1/7. His last letter was dated Sept. 18 and had not received any packages yet. We have sent several. He does mention the lines for the phones are outrageous when he has a chance to use them. My daughter-in-law has spoke to him once on Sept. 18 via Red Cross about the birth of their little girl. I think it was after his letter was already mailed because he does not mention anything about the baby.

I am a Marine Reservist who has yet to be called up on active duty. My battalion has just received its alert order that we will be activated in January and there's a good possibility (but nothing written in stone) that we will be taking the place of 1/7 at Al Qaim. As I believe in being as fully prepared as I possibly can be, I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about this place. I've never been active duty, nor have I been to Iraq, so any secondhand advice would be greatly appreciated. uranium243@hotmail.com

My son, Jake, is with the 1/7 H&S 2nd truck platoon. Just got his first letter today and he insists they are safe. He also said they have enough Halloween candy to last them until next year. The weather has been similar to what we've had in Texas this week, in the 80-90 range. They have good chow, a bed, and a/c. Can't tell you how much better I feel after finally hearing from him. God bless them all!

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone. My fiance is with 1/7 and has been there since the end of August. I hear from him as often as he is able to call - on average, about once every 5 days. He's able to call so often because, to my understanding, when the phone lines are open, he waits up pretty late, or gets up in the middle of the night, and heads for the phones. He's told me a little bit about the place and I have done my research on-line. I believe the place is called Tiger FOB, or something of that nature - it is an abandonded train station, I think. I write letters to him almost every other day it seems and he writes as often as he is able to as well. I usually type my letters because I can type faster than I can write, therefore I can say alot more. I know it seems a little less personal, but he has told me that he likes getting the long letters that I send. Which reminds me, as far as things to send over there - I hear the thing to have is powder gatorade. Justin says they all seem to love it and fight over it. And, I sent a couple of pillows over there as well. Those that got them were very thankful - apparently they are in short supply of pillows. On top of that, I try to send snacks like the pringles in the tall cans that won't smash in transit. I've sent canned chicken and ritz crackers. I'm sure you've all seen the many lists of suggestions that are out there, but I thought I would share that little bit with you. Justin has also told me that everyone seems to be doing well. There have been a few tragic casualties but from what I understand, Al Qaim is not as bad as places like Baghdad and Fallujah. And I must say, I am glad that I stumbled upon this web page. I am away at college and theres not really anyone here who understands the difficulty of all of this. Have a good day - I'm praying for everyone.

My son is on team 8/1 2nd Recon. He went over
with the group from Mobile in August. I hear
from him about once a week. Weather is cooler
at night so that's a relief. He always asks
for food... (and anything to mix with water)
He doesn't tell me much except he's okay and
is busy. He says not to worry. He said they
know how to take care of themselves and he'll be
fine. Of course, I do worry but try to stay busy
and not watch the news so much!!

My son is a corpsman with 1/7, in Iraq since end of August. He's called several times and responds to our emails. Care packages seem to take about 2 weeks to arrive. He loves the powder gatorade, junk food, magazines, DVDs. They seem to be doing okay (considering). Email is a great tool although the guys seem to have to wait in line to get on. I pray constantly for my son and all the guys - always need to remember to stay positive when I write or talk to him. He says he's doing fine.

I told him to ask who had a mom named Phyllis.
He calls frequently and seems to be upbeat lately.

my boyfirend and the true love of my life is over in the Al Qaim, or so i assume. i haven't heard from him in about a week. nothing. no e-mails, phone calles, not a thing. i was wondering if anyone knew if something had happened over there or if it was just this big strike in fallujah. all the same what ever is happening i want to thank everyone for this page. it is excelent. i don't know where i would be without it. if any of you ever wish to talk my e-mail is lilgirlyrussell@yahoo.com. we've gotta stick together and stay strong, because if we fall, then so do they.

My son is with the 3rd Recon/ARP attached to the 31st MEU. I heard from him this morning and he indicated the western border but not where. He said that he would write with more info. Anyone else have any more info on this group?

My youngest son (19), came back from Kabul Afghanistan. He is currently in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and said his platoon will be deployed to Al Qaim, Iraq in early 2005 for 7 months. I'm glad I stumbled into this website so that I can at least get a general idea of what to expect in his next assignment. I continue to pray for him and for everyone in the military.

My son is a Marine assigned to the medical BN in this area. We have had regular e-mails and 2 letters from him since he left in August. We have not heard from him since Nov 2nd. Chris warned us they shutdown the Internet when they get busy there. We have been sending packages to him and he gets them in two to three weeks - which is much better than his last deployment to Iraq last year.

Chris has said for the most part this is a safer place then some and conditions are ok. They have been watching DVDs and one of the doctors has satellite TV - so they watch Fox News. In his letter he said one day they went sand dune sledding (we live in Montana and Chris loves sledding).

God bless every one of our men and women fighting for freedom. And God bless the families at home that send them support and prayers.

Thanks for your message, Jennifer. We live in Idaho so it kind of feels connected with Montana. Our experience with the mail has been mixed. It seems the smaller the package, the faster it travels. On one day about 2 1/2 weeks ago, my son received 4 items that had been mailed at widely different times. That concerns me since we sent 400 pounds of Christmas cheer in 16 boxes to my son's platoon on November 9. We hope it reaches them by Christmas.

hello, i didn't hear from my bf in 1/7 H&S Co. Tanks for 14 days, then i got one e-mail that was 2 sentences. 3 days later i got another one that was 5 sentences. i don't want to get frustrated or anything like that, but i can't stand this. i'm so scared. he seemed so shaken and so unsure he was comming home. it was like those 5 sentences were as close to a goodbye as he could bring himself to write. please... everyone... please pray.

My Fiancee' is currently stationed in Al Qaim, Iraq. He's been there since Aug. He is with 1/7, and his nickname is Butterbean.. That's all I can tell u about him besides the fact that I am very proud of him and all the men over there serving with him. I would like to give thanks to those men who look out for my future husband. I think this website is great, and I will keep u updated. But for now all seems to be well in Qaim just very boring from what I hear. I love u babydoll..

As far as strange people jumping on this site, I can only hope you weren't lashing out at certain people. At the time I had spoken to my fiancee' and posted things were pretty boring I assume they were for him at the moment compared to their first several weeks there. I chat with him alot, get calls, at least twice a week, and hear all his comments about playing the X-box, along with the many other things that keep him occupied. I do know from our talks that their tour there isn't that peachy. I mean we are talking about between Bridge Gaurding, QRF, and IED detecting there are times from what I was told they do get bored. So I hope no offense was taken. Was I wrong to think we were all on the same level as to say what we thought, heard, and share our thoughts about our troops overseas that we're so very proud of, miss, and pray for the safety of their return everyday. At least I know I do along with the families that are going through what we are. Our troops are over their fighting for our freedom all the while someone argues over a post site that's susposed to support our troops. What a great nation we live in..

Hello. We have not heard from our son Chris in a week. Chris is good about e-mailing us regularly. I know they shutdown the Internet at times and I am trying not to worry. Has anyone heard from their loved one in the Al Qaim area?

We got a letter from Chris on Christmas Eve - perfect timing. Of course he had sent it a few weeks earlier. It had a copy of his promotion to Corporal in it which was wonderful.

I am very proud of my son and all the men and women representing our country. I think the hardest thing for Chris to deal with is seeing our guys injured. I want to be able to help him deal with this, but I have no idea how. I can listen and love him, but really that is all I know to do.

May 2005 bring peace and joy.

He said they have been very busy and their Internet was down for a while but he could not give any details. He said he knew the Fox news reporter was in their area but he never saw him and that they have had some hot showers lately - which is such a blessing. well i got the phone call we all dread but at least he is alive. they said he has a fractured arm. which means he might be sent back out to the field. i have learned that broken arms doesn't mean they come home. im waiting for him to call, usually once they are done with surgery they get to call home. they said he is in the surgery tent right now. he was hit with one of the explosions from yesterday. please pray for Robertson to come home safe and alive. thank you.

A very close friend of mine left ******* for Al Qaim also with 3/2. I have been online for the past 3 days trying to learn everything I can about what is going on, where they are going, and what they need. Of all the websites I have found, this one has the most information about Al Quaim. I would love to talk to you more about our guys. I'm praying constantly for them and have faith that they will be fine.

My son Matt left for Iraq on a re-dployment to Iraq as a Marine. He is the only child I have and its very painful!! Proud, is what I have been and will continue to be! I thought it was better than staying worried! I will worry but I know so many of us are supporting and praying! They are on the way to Al Qaim but it is going to be the 28th or after before they make it there so just be patient and know that they are all safe and morale is high. it has quieted down. He said they got rid of
alot of the bad guys there. It's a remote place
but the chow hall opened and the hot showers
were put in place before he left. Not the Hilton
by any stretch but a sturdy, secure place! I

My boyfriend is currently on a plane right now on his way to al Qaim. He has assured me that everything is safe there and there has not been an attack since November of 2006. He says they have been keeping in close contacts with the troops over there and the Marines are completely in control. He also told me that with as low key as it has been, he thinks he will get to talk with everyone at least once a day through e-mail, and call frequently. I know I have been a wreck these past couple of days, so any reassurance that I can give will hopefully help someone else. And like all the others, if you hear anything, please let us all know! hey i randomly came across this website and loved it because my husband is on his first deployment and he is in al qaim. he has been there for 2 months so far with 5 left to go. we are a very young couple im only 18 and im finding out that dealing with this isnt so bad. he calls me every 4 days and says everythin is ok and im glad he is with some of his friends but i cant help but worry for my husband and everyone who is in iraq and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone and their families!
