We're back
After an unplanned weeklong vacation (note to self: never try to upgrade MT software without having a backup plan), we're back, thanks to the great folks at 4DWebhosting. Gary and his crew are the best - cheerful, patient, and know what they're doing and I appreciate them.Posted by Deb at 12:39 PM

Vote for Marine Corps Moms at Milblogging.com
At least three people out there love us! We're listed at Milblogging.com which means that some wonderful person submitted us and at least two other people voted for us by adding our site to their favorites list. Not that we're competitive, but the top five sites are Army. If you'd like to help Marine Corps Moms move higher, register and add your vote by adding us to your favorite Milblogs at www.milblogging.com in the Military Parents section. Then, check out some of the other categories and add to your favorites list. (Hint: The good folks at Castle Argghhh need some love too. John and his crew are terrific at supporting not only the troops but other military bloggers. The Marine Corps Moms appreciate all that they do.)Posted by Deb at 12:19 PM | Comments (3) | TrackBack

Technical Problems
If you're wondering when the site will be updated, we hope to have things back in order soon. I came back from a few days of vacation to find the site broken and over 16,000 SPAM comments and trackbacks clogging my e-mail. The good folks at 4D WebHosting graciously increased our disk space, but that didn't solve the problem. So far, I haven't found a solution but I'm not giving up yet. If anyone out there with a bit of Movable Type knowledge has suggestions, I'd love to hear from you. Please use my deb.conrad(at)gmail.com account since my site e-mail is clogged. In the meantime, the search function still works if you're looking for specific information. The most recent posts can be accessed by clicking on the links - good luck and hope to see you in our regular mode soon! DebPosted by Deb at 01:45 PM | Comments (0) | TrackBack

A comment on comments
Because of some very persistent SPAMmers, we're going to use TypeKey registration for comments in the future. If you're registered with TypeKey, your comments will post without delay. Unregistered commenters will experience a delay until we can manually approve the comment. I apologize for the inconvenience but it will cut down considerably on the garbage posted to the site each day. Thanks for understanding.

MCM celebrates!
One year ago, we started this website with the hope that we'd be able to reach out to other Marine Corps families. It's been quite a year. We've made a lot of new friends and accomplished some amazing things. Thanks to everyone who has put up with our growing pains . . . we realize that some pains were larger than others, but we're working on solutions. Through some generous donations, we were able to purchase the software we needed to upgrade the site and pay for another six months hosting fees. Soon, we'll have our bulletin board up and running. Watch for Operation Santa 2005 launching sometime this summer - we'd love to send Christmas to all Marines deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan this December. Keep us posted if you'd like to be involved. We've got a few more ideas kicking around and we invite other Marine families and friends to become involved. We'll keep you posted! Until then, feel free to use the Donations link at left to help support this site. We're not out to make a profit and any money donated above the costs of operating this site will be used to kickstart Operation Santa this year. Thanks so much for all your support.

Comments are back!!
Phil at 4D Webhosting deserves a round of applause. We moved our account to 4D last month and Phil has provided service over and above that offered by the other services we contacted. I'm happy . . . and those of you who have e-mailed me repeatedly asking that comment functionality be restored will be happy too. Thanks, Phil!!

Comment on Comments
I know that many of the readers of this site are a bit frustrated with the current problem with comments - we are too! However, the good folks at Movable Type are helping us fix the problem and we hope that we'll be fully interactive again within a day or too. Your patience is much appreciated.

Back Online!
After an unplanned vacation, this Marine Corps Mom is back online. A database error resulted in a frozen website and it took a few days to get back. A HUGE thank you to the good folks at 4D Web Hosting. They not only provided us with enough space to grow during the next year, but they FIXED our problem. Their customer service is wonderful and if you're looking for a great web host, check them out.

It's good to have friends
Cassandra at Villainous Company and John at Aargghhh!!! scooped me! I'd planned on doing a one-time-only appeal for donations for website maintenance next month when we renew our hosting agreement for the Marine Corps Moms website. but they've always been a bit ahead of the curve and their kind words today about the Marine Corps Moms website are no exception.
We have some exciting things planned for the next year, but this is rapidly outgrowing being able to justify the hit to my budget as just a hobby. We're not looking to make a profit - all donations over and above what we need to fill our wish list will be used to support our other projects (cool ties, sand scarfs, Operation Santa).
I'll do a complete "SOTS" (State of the Site) on March 1, but here's a preview.
- We need more web space. We're bumping up against our available disk space and are at 75% of bandwidth capacity. It's growing steadily which is exciting - we appreciate each and every reader.
- Currently, we're using an older version of Movable Type and we desperately need to upgrade this to the newest version. The main reason for this is the daily deluge of comment and trackback SPAM. I'm spending at least an hour a day deleting offers for online poker, home financing, viagra, and increased penis size. Updating will provide better tools to deal with this.
- We plan to launch a discussion board that will allow a better interface for parents and spouses to connect with each other. Right now, a fair number of readers are using the comments feature - awkward at best. To do this, we need to purchase vBulletin software and get it up and running.
In a few weeks, we'll give you a comprehensive overview of where we're going and what we're doing. To that end, we'd like to hear from you - what do you find useful, what would you like to see more of . . . or less of?
Please contact me at deb@marinecorpsmoms.com. PayPal donations can be sent to that same address. And we'll find a way to express our thanks to anyone who donates.

Welcome to our website
Welcome to our USMC family website. We support our Marines, their families, and those who love them by linking sources of support and information, in collaboration with other public, private, and military groups, and individuals.
We are currently working on the design and will be updating the site soon. Our goal is to make this site easy to navigate and blogger friendly. We hope to make a difference for all Marines and their families.
