True Grit
Cpl Glen R. Springstead recently interviewed another modern-day hero of the Corps.

In boot camp, recruits learn that every Marine is a rifleman and this is reinforced annually when each Marine must requalify on the rifle range. Cpl Young put that training to good use when the base he was working on in An Najaf, Iraq came under attack by approximately 800 anti-coalition militiamen, April 4, 2004. Young fought alongside seven Blackwater Security personnel to secure the base and defeat the enemy. Here's his account of the day's events.
The day was Sunday, April 4th. Corporal Lonnie Young had been in Iraq since January, three long, hot months in the war-torn country and a far cry from his hometown of Dry Ridge, Kentucky -- small-town America with a population of 2,000. |
“We went back downstairs to the radio room to continue the installs, and after about twenty-minutes we finished up everything. I then grabbed all of our gear and took it back outside to the five-ton truck.” |
The title Marine - earned, never given - has inspired ordinary men and women to do extraordinary things for 228 years. Cpl Young isn't the first and he won't be the last Marine to ignore his own injuries to protect others, but this remarkable account deserves to be shared.

CPL YOUNG WAS ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS WE USED TO PRAY TOGETHER FOR ALL OF THE OTHER TROOPS AND ENCOURAGE THEM EVEN WHEN THE WERE NOT AROUND. THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE WITH MAKING FRIENDS IN THE MILITARY IS THAT WHEN YOU FELL REAL GOOD ABOUT A PERSON CLOSE TO YOU LIKE CPL YOUNG THEY HAVE TO LEAVE. I MISS HIM AND WISH WE COULD REUNITE ONE OF THESE DAYS SOON AND SHARE OUR WAR STORIES LIKE OLD TIMES. YOUNG IF YOU READ THIS WE LOVE YOU AND ALWAYS WILL AND THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DID WHILE YOU WERE ATTACHED TO CJTF-7/MNC-I. I AM VERY PROUD OF YOU AND ALWAYS WILL BE. LOVE AND MISS YOU.

I have a few comments on this I am sick that he said half the stuff he did because I was the only female on that roof with very effective fire. And Capt Eddy was on my team. He had just told me to move and let him see, thats when he went down like a ton of bricks. By the time I got to him the two spanish soldiers were pulling off his gear not young. And when I saw the injury, I knew the exit wound had to be worse. Thats when i had the spanish soldier put pressure on his soldier while the other spanish soldier and I turned him over noticing the huge exit wound above his kidney. I then took all my gear off my kevlar, vest, bdu top, and thats when I ducked down and took the tshirt off my back and plugged the hole with it. Because in my training they said to use the cleanest thing you have if you dont have supplies. It makes me mad that Young is trying to make it look like he did everything. When he wasnt there for the whole thing. We faught from 1130am to 2300 until special forces faught their way through. Also on another note, I have letters from the blackwater backing my story. Also the Marine Major that was with young was hiding under the table and he tried to get the silverstar. On the second day of the fight he told me females dont belong on the front a told me to run the radios, which i knew nothing about. Thats when I went down stairs and my LTC asked why I was not upstairs and I told him what he said to me. He marched me right back up the stairs and told him she faught just as hard as anyone else with ver effective fire and she is not your soldier or your not in command i am. He tried to get a silver star and thats when everyone politly laughed because he did nothting but hide the whole time. I worked my but off and faught for a week with a fractured hand and did not know it unitl I got back to baghdad where i was stationed at the time. Also capt eddie knew that Young was not telling the truth either.

I know this if off topic but I'm looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is needed to get setup? I'm assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I'm not very internet savvy so I'm not 100% sure. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
